One KHz Order Narrow Linewidth Fiber Laser Using Rayleigh Backscattering Mechanism in an Additional Piece Optical Fiber

A simple, low-cost, single-longitudinal mode, C-band narrow-linewidth optical fiber laser is presented based on the methodology of Rayleigh backscattering (RBS). In this paper, a 1551 nm ring developed, and single-mode (SMF) added to compress line width. When SMF length RBS cavity 120 m, has better performance than that in other lengths with width 1.46 KHz housing shield. The signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) 59.86 dB, its maximum output power 9.4 mW. It can quickly achieve single longitude-mode operation by controlling variable attenuator (VOA). bit error rate at 10 Gb/s PRBS NRZ modulation measured be 10−9 when receiving −16.2 dBm.

A frequency-modulated continuous-wave technique is used to detect the presence of frequency shifts in the Rayleigh-backscattered light in a single-mode optical fiber as a result of a changing temperature.
